This week, Emma and I attended a tutorial with Paul to discuss the story and visual approach. We then went on a socially-distanced walk as we both find it quite difficult to communicate and discuss ideas over Zoom. Overall, we came away with a sense that it would be best to focus on the sense of guilt felt by Valerie and her friends and how this effects their relationship. This seems like a more unique perspective and allows the characters to be more developed and have active roles. I’m pleased that we now have a more focused approach to the story and am keen to see how it develops with this in mind.
Emma is still working on a draft but, from our discussions, it seems like she plans to move slightly away from the dark/horror tone of the first draft, while remaining very surreal and atmospheric. This means I may have to rethink my approach somewhat but many of my initial influences like Stalker and We Need to Talk About Kevin are still relevant. We also discussed ways to portray Valerie’s assault more symbolically as more direct representations could be seen as insensitive and could be emotionally challenging for our team to produce.
